The Karknosze is a mountain range situated in the southwest of Poland and the north of Czech Republic.
They make up the western part of the Sudenten and belong to the oldest mountains in Poland and in Europe.

Man has influenced the natural character of the mountains over a long period of time. Thus
at the foothill most woodland has been replaced by meadows and pastures, still apart from villages.

The lower and upper mountain zone are largely covered by vast forests. They have been altered
considerably. They are either managed by State Forestry, by private people or by the administration
of Karknoski National Park.

The vegetation and forest on the highest areas of the mountain range - the sub-alpine and alpine
tundra zones
- are quite natural. The "forest" is being dominated by Dwarf pine Pinus mugo, which
reaches up to 2,5 metres!

We invite you to join us on our one week trekking through the area, which we explored in
october 2004.
Be sure - this is the domain of Capercaille. We did not spot this beautyful bird,
we heard the beautiful song of Black grouse a few times instead.

Autumn beaches in the Jedlinki forest
Sundown seen from fishing ponds near Glebock

One more autumn beach
The lower mountain zone (altitude 500 to 1000 meters)
The higher parts of the Karknosze are protected as a National Park

Relic pine forest on rocks surrounded by beech forest (Chojnik hill)
Karknosze National Park is a transboundary World Biosphere Reserve of about 60,000 hectares
The Kamienczyk Waterfall is a remarkable spot on the western side of the National Park

An apple and a traditional wooden house on the Kopa hill near Zachelmie

The autumn atmosphere on a tourist trail leading to the Chojnik castle

Forests on the higher mountain zone and above (altitude over 1000 meters)
Vast areas of the higher Spruce forest have completely died resulting prolonged heavy air pollution in the 1970s and '80s.

The corpses of Spruces - victims of the air pollution of the Silezian-Dresden-Prague industrial area

As the pollution of the 1970's and 80's has been reduced considerably young birch forest sprouts again

Spruces as dead bodies - they are still standing

Regenerating forest along the cobblestone road to Sreniczka mountain
Dead bodies everywhere
At the end of the trekking we'll sleep in the vicinity
of outstanding nature (in a mountain hut)
The Sub-alpine and Alpine tundra and rock zone (altitude over 1250 meters)
The Rowan Sorbus aucuparia is the only broad leaved tree which grows in the sub-alpine zone

Dwarf pine Pinus mugo is the most typical species of the high mountains
Fresh and clear water is at hand in countless narrow streams
This symbolic Spruce is an element of the emblem of Karkonosze National Park

The Black Ridge has a very scare vegetation due to millions of stones

Monument at the source of the Elbe river which runs through Poland, Czech Republic and Germany.
The Elbe springs in the Karkonosze (trees on the emblems at right) and ultimately ends in the Northsea as
a wide lowland river (Otter and water on the emblems at left).

The big Elbe river springs in the Alpine tundra zone of the Czech part of Karkonosze National Park

Innumerable drops of water fill the Elbe!

Tourist infrastucture on the "Below Sniezka" marshland

The "Below Sniezka" is an upland plain of 300 hectares.
Its water is exceptionally clean.
